DU weapons use in Iraq, drastic birth defects in Fallujah
Ann Garrison
2009-11-17 9:00 PM
On Friday, 11.13.2009, the London Guardian reported a "Huge rise in birth defects in Fallujah," Iraq. I sent the news to KPFA Radio 94.1FM Weekend News Anchor Anthony Fest, along with contact info for Bob Nichols, San Francisco Bay View Newspaper correspondent and winner of a 2004 Project Censored Award for his reporting on U.S. military's use of depleted uranium weapons in Iraq, and consequent radiation poisoining. I then edited and animated the resulting KPFA Evening News segment, 11.15.2009. (image/jpeg)
Good and Bad Choices for Energy Policy and the Environmental Movement 2009-2010
Morton S. Skorodin, M.D.
2009-11-16 3:43 PM
Two energy/environment phenomena are being widely discussed currently. These are global warming, and its mitigation, and the nuclear resurgence – the worldwide push to supply power with nuclear power plants. Careful study of these issues leads to the following conclusions:
1. Global warming is real and is causing harm.
2. Global warming is mostly due to heat production by human industry since the 1800s, from nuclear power and fossil fuels, better termed hydrocarbons, – coal, oil, natural gas. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2 play a minor role even though they are widely claimed the cause.
3. Both nuclear and hydrocarbon-based power must be eliminated to solve the global warming problem.
4. Nuclear power advocates have commandeered the global warming/greenhouse gas formula to promote nuclear power, based upon two errors: exaggerating the role of CO2 on the one hand and incorrectly claiming that nuclear power plants do not produce CO2 on the other hand.
5. Nuclear power can not be separated from nuclear weapons, which are essential to the consistent drive for American military dominationof the world. This is the reason for nuclear power. Nuclear power does not make sense as a safe, efficient, or economical way to provide energy.
6. Solar and solar-derived (wind, wave) sources of power do not add heat to the environment and can be used to supply virtually unlimited electrical energy without causing global warming. If done properly they will open up new vistas of human freedom and cultural development. They also produce much less CO2 than either nukes or hydrocarbons.

Obama is a sociopath, but, it's nothing personal
Ann Garrison
2009-11-11 8:16 PM
Obama is a sociopath, but that shouldn’t shock. He’s a U.S. President, and Commander-in-Chief of the largest, most lethal arsenal in history, which could destroy the world many times over, and, which has a budget many times the size of the next 10 national military budgets combined.
Ipso facto, he's a sociopath. But, it's nothing personal. (image/jpeg)

More than ever, the oil must be ours
Emilio José Lemos de Lima
2009-10-28 6:41 PM
Just like in the beginning. With the same passion and the same radicality of campaign "The oil is ours". If, in the 1950's, when our daily production was 2,300 barrels, the whole country has mobilized in favor of retaining the oil wealth to Brazilians, what to say about today, when, in only four fields, it is estimated that the reserves of pre-salt layer will produce 16 billion barrels?

"Militarism is the way corporations maintain their access to their food supply — the planet." --Steve Martinot, Militarism and Global Warming

MoveOn.org takes the fudge, in Iraq and Afghanistan
Ann Garrison
2009-10-24 8:43 PM
Obama's Nobel Peace Prize already took the cake, so this takes the fudge:
MoveOn.org, the Democratic Party's fundraising and PR PAC, is urging all of us to join a global rally, against global warming, on 10.24.2009. In San Francisco, they want us to show up at Justin Herman Plaza, at 3:00 P.M. And, they promise that: "There will even be events in Afghanistan and Iraq." (image/jpeg)

My first direct action as a means for social change
Alison McCrary
2009-10-20 8:46 PM
Tonight, I participated in my first non-violent direct action. Though I’m usually passive and non-confrontational, I believe it is sometimes necessary to foster a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. Sometimes issues need dramatization so that they can no longer be ignored.
The action took place October 13, 2009 at Tulane University against Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. (image/jpeg)
Taping Our Mouths Shut to Scream Out Our Dissent
Emily Ratner

On October 13, Tulane University, a bastion of privilege in the South, hosted Ehud Olmert as a featured speaker. In response, more than 70 demonstrators engaged in protests and direct actions both inside and outside the event, and were interviewed by local media. Despite much hostility, they also found a lot of support, and have found their organizing now has even more momentum. Below is one person's perspective on the event. (image/jpeg + 3 comments)
