My first direct action as a means for social change
Alison McCrary
2009-10-20 8:46 PM
Tonight, I participated in my first non-violent direct action. Though I’m usually passive and non-confrontational, I believe it is sometimes necessary to foster a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. Sometimes issues need dramatization so that they can no longer be ignored.
The action took place October 13, 2009 at Tulane University against Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. (image/jpeg)

In response, more than 70 demonstrators engaged in protests and direct actions both inside and outside the event, and were interviewed by local media. Despite much hostility, they also found a lot of support, and have found their organizing now has even more momentum. Below is one person's perspective on the event. (image/jpeg + 3 comments)

2009-09-05 11:05 AM This article critiques Jordan Flaherty’s recent article “Homeless and Struggling In New Orleans: On the Fourth Anniversary of Katrina, New Orleans is Still Far From Recovery”. This flawed work simultaneously exposes the widespread scourge and misery of homelessness four years after Katrina, and obscures the complicity of non-profit outfits, such as UNITY for the Homeless, in the very problem they claim to be addressing (text/plain)

The letter follows months of speculation on the Downtown Development District's intentions regarding Iberville. DDD is a quasi-governmental agency that is tasked with increasing land values in the CBD/Warehouse district areas. DDD has a long history of lobbying and planning to demolish public housing.
